Killing Eve fans were treated to a first look at Sandra Oh in The Sympathizer, also starring Robert Downey Jr, coming to the newly rebranded Max next year.

An adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name by Viet Thanh Nguyen, The Sympathizer is co-created by Park Chan-wook (Oldboy, The Handmaiden) and Don McKellar, with Park also directing.

The miniseries follows the Captain (Cowboy Bebop's Hoa Xuande), a North Vietnam mole known to have infiltrated the South Vietnam army. Near the end of the Vietnam War, he's forced to relocate to the US as a refugee, continuing to report back to the Viet Cong but having his loyalty challenged by his new life.

The first-look trailer shows Xuande's spy ironically addressing prying questions about his time in Vietnam, ominously assuring he's "never killed anyone" as a montage of him holding a gun and strapping an unknown prisoner to a torture chair follows.

As the character says he loves America with a disturbing grin, it's clear there's more to him behind his quiet façade.

Xuande leads an ensemble cast, also including Fred Nguyen Khan, Toan Le, Vy Le, Alan Trong, Vy Le, and Ky Duyen.

Oh and Downey Jr, who also serves as executive producer with his wife Susan Downey, stars in recurring roles alongside Kieu Chinh and Nguyen Cao Ky Duyen.

While the Grey's Anatomy actress is set to play Ms Sofia Mori, the Marvel star will portray different antagonist roles representing the American establishment, including a California congressman and a CIA agent who can be seen questioning the Captain at the end of the clip.

The Sympathizer will be streaming on Max in 2024.
