Key Tips For Finding Your Own Style And Confidently Rocking It

Everybody loves people with style! We love stylish men, women - even stylish pets. We love having a perfect hairstyle and having a home is all about “charging” it with your own style.

But do most of us really have a style? Or do we get our daily inspiration directly from the source and forget to tailor it to our own liking? We live in a society that is constantly evolving, constantly challenging us and that steals our precious time.

In times like these, we prefer the easy way - blindly following the trends even if they don’t suit us - or basically copying the style of the outfits we see on our favourite stars and throughout media. But that’s wrong, and it’s bad for our self-esteem. Let’s try following our inner voice instead.

Being in a textile and design restoration business with her husband in the 50′s, Iris Apfel began travelling the world; that’s when she started buying pieces of non-Western, artisanal clothes which she wore to clients’ high-society parties. Iris is now one of the most original fashion icons of our time. She has some pretty unique pieces of jewellery bought from her travels that define her style:

“I think jewellery can change an outfit more than anything else. Transformation, punch, individuality: One or all of the above are why you should wear jewellery.”

Is it jewellery you love most? Take Iris’ example and stock on unique pieces that you can style with everything! Artisanal or traditional pieces from different parts of the world are a must. Invest in one good statement piece rather than in cheap, industrial pieces.

Think you can only have your own style if you’re rich and able to afford expensive pieces? You are wrong! In fact, even Karl Lagerfeld admits it:

“Never use the word “cheap”. Today everybody can look chic in inexpensive clothes (the rich buy them too). There is good clothing design on every level today. You can be the chicest thing in the world in a T-shirt and jeans — it’s up to you.”

Alexa Chung is the living example. She keeps it simple and practical, she loves a fashion throwback and her style is probably the most copied in the world! What’s her secret? Staying true to herself and always looking impeccable. The secret is in the small details:

“My look is pretty low maintenance, I have a great team around me for hair and make-up, and they have also taught me some great tricks over the years for when I’m doing my own.”

If Alexa inspires you, try finding a hairstyle that really suits you, maybe one that doesn’t require much maintenance, which can become your signature; opt for an impeccable makeup. That doesn’t mean you need to use a thousand products, that means your makeup needs to look as natural and fresh as possible, always. Whatever you will wear will look great on you.

Loving too many different styles and can’t decide? Make a fashion-cocktail which will define your style. Look how gorgeous Veronika Heilbrunner is! Delicate femininity, playful colours, masculine footwear and subtle sexuality? Yes, please.

Find the items that define you, no matter what these are: do you love a colour in particular or do you love casual footwear? Start wearing them until they become part of your signature style. It doesn’t matter you love high heels or a bold red lip, make them work with whatever you’re wearing. Be fierce, that’s the start of having your own style and why not, becoming a fashion icon.

Don’t be afraid to tell the world loud and clear who you are, what you love, and how unstoppable you are! No matter if neon green hair is your thing, or unicorns, maybe you love Tupac or Nirvana, or you wanted to become an astronaut.

Take inspiration from your own childhood or teenage years, from the bands you love, from your favourite food, from the colour of the sky on a bright summer day. Find inspiration from the plants in your garden or from an artist you love. Take that inspiration and turn it into something great - make it your signature style. And the rest will follow.
