Kenneth Cole’s 14-Acre Estate in Upstate New York Lists for $22 Million

Some might call Purchase, near the border with Connecticut in New York’s tony Westchester County, a haven for A-listers and power brokers, including The New York Times, who dubbed the wee hamlet “a celebrity sanctum” in 2017. Kenneth Cole, the American designer who launched his eponymously named business in 1982, has been retreating to the affluent community for over 30 years. However, the activist and philanthropist is ready to hand over the keys to his stately manor house, which presides over 14 park-like acres, for a cool $22 million. Cole reportedly bought the property for $2.8 million in 1991.

Built in 1890, the three-story mansion provided the backdrop for the 1969 film Goodbye, Columbus, starring Ali MacGraw and Richard Benjamin, an adaptation of Philip Roth’s 1959 novella of the same name. In the film, scenes play out across the property, during which viewers get a glimpse of the home’s elegant interiors as well as the property’s one-acre freshwater pond. Seven bedrooms and six baths, plus for more powder rooms, sprawl out over the custom mansion’s nearly 12,000 square feet. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Details like polished wood floors and an arched entryway pop in the foyer, speaking to the home’s sophisticated flair. Dual living rooms are found nearby with large windows that let the light in, alongside marble-clad fireplaces and one covered veranda. Each room in the residence offers garden views thanks to the abode’s elevated position, including the formal dining room, where owners can reportedly host 80 people for a dinner party, and the chef’s kitchen.

The kitchen includes two La Cornue ranges and a hammered copper-and-wood island complemented by an adjoining breakfast area. The adjacent family room is poised to be the post-meal recovery outpost before heading off to bed. Speaking of which, the primary suite offers two of everything: two bathrooms, two walk-in closets and two private balconies.

The beautifully appointed bedrooms are fantastic, of course, but the entertaining amenities are better. A playroom featured on the third floor keeps children occupied, while the backyard offers something for everyone with a saltwater pool and five-hole putting green. Pickleball, basketball, and tennis courts are featured on the grounds, too, next to a gazebo and a life-size dollhouse. Two saunas and a meditation garden also help with decompressing after working and vigorous physical activity.

“I wish that was the house I grew up in,” Cole told Bloomberg in an interview, and now, with his children now grown, the designer and his wife Maria Cuomo Cole are ready to part ways with their longtime home, which marketing material has deemed “one of New York’s most prestigious estates.” Patricia L. Hirsch and Susan McDonnell of Julia B. Fee Sotheby’s International Realty and Leslie McElwreath of Sotheby’s International Realty-Greenwich Brokerage hold the listing.
