Keep dust away longer with this cheap DIY dusting spray
Dusting might temporarily reduce the level of dust in your home, but Whitney White (@simplecleanfit_whit), an Airbnb cleaning specialist, shared a DIY “dusting spray” that she claims not only helps polish furniture and surfaces but can help keep dust away longer.
White’s TikTok with the dusting spray has received 2.4 million views, with commenters saying that the concoction “works great” to deter dust.
The secret, White explained, is that the olive oil in the spray helps coat surfaces to repel dust.
In the comment section, @kn.kush broke down the recipe that White shared:
1 cup of water
1/4 cup of vinegar
2 tablespoons of olive oil
10 drops of lemon essential oil
Apartment Therapy backed up White’s spray recipe, noting that the right dusting repellant spray can “cut cleaning time in half.” The olive oil — or a similar oil — in a dust-repellant spray coats surfaces, causing any dust that tries to stick to bounce off and end up on the floor, making it easier to clean.
“Not me not knowing why people polished things and constantly complaining about dust in my home,” commented @atownninja14.
“I used to too! I could not figure out why things were so dusty. I used to dust 1-2 times a week. Now I can go a couple weeks!” replied White.
Other commenters noted that the rest of the ingredients have effective cleaning power as well.
“Vinegar is the solution to everything. Fabric softener. Stain remover. Cleaning,” observed @tlksm.
“It really is! I use so much vinegar, as well as baking soda!” agreed White.
When making the spray, shake it up before use to help mix all the ingredients. And if your spray just won’t come together, you can try adding a few drops of dish soap.
“A few drops of dishsoap acts as an emulsifier for the oil!” explained @ikschill03.
“Oooh I’ve never tried that! I do use dishsoap in my glass cleaner and it works really well!” White replied.
Some essential oils can be potentially harmful around pets, so White noted in the comment section that you can easily swap out an oil you feel comfortable with or skip the essential oil drops altogether.
“The citrus oil helps polish as well as adding scent but you can omit it and use another scent!” White wrote.
Apartment Therapy also suggested rubbing a fabric sheet on any places that tend to collect dust in your home, like baseboards and lamp shades, to further repel dust and deter it from sticking. According to Molly Maid, dryer sheets leave a trace of anti-static residue that will repel the dust. You can use the fabric sheet with or without the spray if desired.
