If you're a whiskey connoisseur, heck even if you've only heard the odd tidbit about the peaty alcoholic drink, you're probably aware that Japanese whiskey is usually top shelf.

And why is that, you might ask? Well, if you're really interested, it's got a lot to do with Japan's distinct seasons, which affect the maturation process and also, of course, the Japanese flair for finessing an art form.

And considering its premium reputation, it follows that so many prominent celebrity men, with expensive tastes and the paycheque to match them, have such an obsession with it.

One such man is movie darling and enduring heartthrob Keanu Reeves who, as well as motorbike road trips, spends some of his down time in the company of a good single malt. Indeed, he was recently quoted saying he'd only discuss the future of much-loved film franchise John Wick while sat at a Japanese whiskey bar, drink in hand.

And now, the Point Break star has announced that he's starring in a new advert and also a short documentary series, directed by Hollywood heavyweights Sofia Coppola and Roman Coppola, celebrating 100 years of The House of Suntory, the founding house of Japanese whiskey.

It's actually not the first time that Reeves has featured campaigning for the brand. He originally appeared in an iconic advert for The House of Suntory in 1992, which you can watch below:

At the time, he joined the ranks of some big names who also featured in campaigns for the brand, like Sammy Davis Jr, Ray Charles and Matt Dillon.

The new advert, directed by Oscar-winner Sofia Coppola, acts as a love letter to 'Suntory Time' - a phrase which Coppola made popular in her hit film Lost In Translation, with Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson.

The docu-series, which follows later this year, and is directed by Sofia's brother Roman Coppola, sees the director and Speed actor take a trip to Japan, to tell a story about 'The Nature and Spirit of Japan,' exploring the culture, nature and craftsmanship behind the drink.

Of his role in both of these, Reeves says: 'It’s very special to collaborate in honour of this milestone anniversary. My admiration for the whisky goes beyond tasting the whisky. It is the elevated Japanese craftsmanship and attention to every detail that makes Suntory Whisky so special. As an actor honing and perfecting my own craft, sharing this process in a docuseries is a thrill.'
