Katy Perry has opened up about her mental health, saying she’s been suffering “waves of depression” amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The Fireworks singer, who is currently pregnant with her first child with fiancé Orlando Bloom, shared her feelings on being in quarantine and her journey to motherhood.

“Sometimes I don't know what's worse trying to avoid the virus or the waves of depression that come with this new norm,” she wrote on Twitter.

It isn’t the first time Perry has got real about being pregnant in a pandemic. Over the weekend, she opened up about struggling to adapt to life in quarantine while expecting a baby.

The 35-year-old singer was taking part in SHEIN’s Together livestream event, and told the host she was having both “good days” and others that she finds more difficult, “where I cry when I look down at my toes or I cry when just doing simple tasks.”

“I think a lot of that is hormonal and I'm not used to being around so many people all in a confined [or] a small space for so long. I'm used to going [out] all the time,” she continued, as reported by E!.

“There is not really anywhere to go besides my car. So I go to my car a lot. That is my safe space.”

It isn’t the first time the star has got candid about her mental health journey. Earlier this year, she revealed she’d previously struggled with her wellbeing.

She told Vogue India: “In the past, I had been able to overcome it, but this time something happened that made me fall down too many flights of stairs. I had to really go on a mental health journey.”

Despite finding some quarantine days more difficult than others, the singer has been keeping her Instagram fans amused by notching up her quarantine fancy dress efforts.

From dressing as a giant toilet roll to bake banana bread, to turning herself into a jumbo hand sanitiser, being in lockdown hasn’t stopped the star from whipping out some of her best costumes yet.

The pregnant star also recently shared a funny video of her baby girl during an ultrasound.

The video appears to show the singer’s baby “giving her the middle finger” during her scan, which she shared on International Mother’s Day.

The 35-year-old captioned the video: “When your unborn daughter gives you a middle finger from the womb you know you’re in for it #happymothersdaytome.”

Perry first sparked pregnancy rumours when she debuted the music video for her song Never Worn White, in which she appeared cradling a bump.

And after a flurry of speculation from fans on social media, the star confirmed the news in an Instagram Live.

“There’s a lot that’s happening this summer. Not only will I be giving birth, literally, and figuratively… to something you guys have been waiting for,” she told fans.

“I’m excited, we’re excited, and happy. It’s probably the longest secret I’ve ever had to keep. I thought I would tell you guys in the best way through a piece of music.”

The pop star recently announced she will be releasing a new single entitled Daisies on 15 May, sparking speculation it would be a collaboration with Taylor Swift.
