Kate Middleton's Surgery and Hospitalization Came as a Total Surprise to Her Broader Circle of Friends
Kate Middleton is currently in the hospital following an abdominal surgery that Kensington Palace described as "planned" in a lengthy statement on January 17. However, the surgery is said to have been a surprise to members of her friend group.
Per People's reporting "there had been no indication that anything was wrong" within the Prince and Princess of Wales's "broader circle of family friends," and Kate's hospitalization was a surprise "even to those who work closely with the royal family."

While Kate hasn't been seen since the annual royal Christmas Day walk, People reports that she spent the holidays with friends and family, and went on outings in the countryside. Wills and Kate then spent the New Year with the Middletons, and celebrated Kate's birthday on January 9. However, by January 11, it "became evident" that some of Kate's royal engagements hadn't been confirmed and there was "growing concern" behind the scenes.
Kate is expected to be in hospital for 10-14 days total, and will finish her recovery at home. A palace insider tells People that “Her parents are an enduring factor in the upbringing of their grandchildren. And they will be a reassuring presence when she goes back to Windsor to recuperate. She is in great hands and will have lots of care and support at home."
