Kate Beckinsale hits back at trolls who criticise her for dating younger men

Kate Beckinsale has responded to online trolls for criticising her decision to date younger men.

On Thursday, Beckinsale shared a video on Instagram of herself and her cat covered in googly eyes alongside the caption: “Nightclubs are closed but we have googly eyes and mostly it’s the same except less risk of illness and no one has wee’d all over the ladies loo seat [sic].”

However, it seemed as though some of the actor’s followers were more interested in her personal life than her call to stay indoors amid the coronavirus pandemic, with many remarking on her romantic life.

Earlier this year, the 46-year-old ended her relationship with comedian Pete Davidson, 26, and has most recently been linked to 23-year-old musician Goody Grace, who she is living with in Los Angeles during lockdown.

After replying to a few comments, Beckinsale hit back with a witty reply to one person who asked, “Why do you keep dating guys that could be your children?”

Beckinsale responded: “Every relationship I have had has been solely to annoy you.”

When another person commented: “You need a man,” Beckinsale wrote, “Tell me why? To stop me sticking eyes on the cat? What if he liked eyes on the cat? What if I won’t stop? How will he help this situation.”

Later, when someone else asked if she was married, the Serendipity star wrote, “to the cat, yes.”

This is not the first time Beckinsale has spoken out against the criticism she receives for having relationships with younger men.

In an interview with Women’s Health in May, the actor commented on how “ridiculous” it is that people criticise her age-gap romances.

“It can feel like a little bit of a political act to be a woman over 32 who’s having any fun at all,” Beckinsale said.

“And by that, I don’t mean doing drugs and drinking and partying, because I never am, but being goofy, and going out, and not going, ‘Oh my God, I’m going to sit home and anticipate menopause while crocheting’."

Beckinsale went on to compare how her lifestyle choices are reported in the media compared to those of men, adding: “I witness men constantly doing whatever they like, whether in relationships, or deciding to buy a motorbike, or getting a tattoo.

“It hasn’t been interpreted as, ‘why hasn’t he had more children?’ or ‘is he ever going to decide to become a parent?’ or ‘why has he had so many girlfriends?’.”
