Karl Lagerfeld is giving away free prom dresses as part of a new charity collaboration with non-profit organisation Girls Inc. Together they will dress underprivileged girls for their prom night - a milestone, pressurised moment for most young women.

For every dress purchased on karl.com in April, the designer will donate another of his dresses to the cause. The looks will be available for 10 New York schools, where 100 girls will be asked to pick a style either online or at a pop-up store on 27 April. Lagerfeld's party dresses typically cost between £70 and £162.

Girls Inc offers a number of programmes designed to inspire and empower, as well as providing support, mentoring and guidance.

Lagerfeld has always been interested in championing young women. “The girls of today are the women of tomorrow," he told Vanity Fair in March.
