Kanye West has apparently filed documents to legally change his name to Ye. No middle or last name, just Ye.
According to E News, the rapper filed a request to change his name from Kanye Omari West to Ye on August 24. He first gave himself the nickname back in 2018 when he tweeted: "The being formally known as Kanye West...I am YE."
On the request form, Kanye cited "personal reasons" for the change. But the name change isn't official just yet, and the petition has to be approved by a judge.
Speaking about what the name means to him, Kanye told Billboard: "I believe 'ye' is the most commonly used word in the Bible, and in the Bible, it means 'you.' So, I'm you, I'm us, it's us. It went from Kanye, which means the only one, to just Ye — just being a reflection of our good, our bad, our confusion, everything."
He later released an album titled Ye before following up with Jesus Is King in 2019. More recently, Kanye has been touring the US for the release of his much-anticipated Donda album. Instead of releasing the album on streaming platforms, Kanye has been hosting listening parties across the US with the support of his ex-wife, Kim Kardashian and their four kids.
Donda was initially scheduled for release on July 23, and is now expected to be released after his listening party in Chicago on August 26.
Over the years, Kanye has gone by a number of nicknames, including Pablo, Yeezy, Yeezus and Mr. West. So, whether or not Ye will stick, we'll have to wait and see.
