Kaitlyn Bristowe shares more details on why she got an 'upper bleph' and what her surgery experience was like: 'Zero pain'
The "Bachelorette" alum, 39, is getting more candid about the blepharoplasty she had in early December.
Kaitlyn Bristowe isn't holding back when it comes to the details about her recent surgery. The 39-year-old Bachelorette alum is opening up about the blepharoplasty, or "upper bleph," she underwent late last year.
In a clip the Canadian reality TV star posted on Instagram on Wednesday, she compared older photos of herself to now, explained why she decided to get the procedure and shared what the surgery was like regarding time as well as pain.
"I got an upper bleph, let's talk about it," Bristowe started off in her clip, after stumbling over the procedure's pronunciation. She started off her video showing a photo of herself from roughly a decade ago, pointing out the hooded lids over her eyes.
"I tried to overcorrect it by getting Botox, where I got too much bad Botox and it actually drooped my lid even more," she shared, explaining she also had lip filler, teeth bonding, lost baby fat and had cheek filler over the years.
Bristowe then showed off a close-up of a more recent photo where she said she has a "regular amount of Botox." She added she still had her hooded eyelid, and realized it's "not that bad" but was something that bothered her for awhile.
"I also have wanted to tone down the Botox, so I figured that getting a bleph would help me open that eye without getting all the Botox," she continued, adding this was — "contrary to popular belief" — the first time she went "under the knife" for cosmetic surgery.
Bristowe's video then included a selfie of herself showing off her stitches and bruising post-surgery. She noted the procedure took around 15 to 20 minutes, and that there was no pain with only some itching. Moreover, she only had to have her stitches for roughly 10 to 14 days.
She added one of her dogs clawed at her eye, so she had to get it restitched. I had to sit sleeping up for about two days. Other than that, I kind of went on with life as per usual," she said, noting she was even walking around with glasses on after those two days of recovery. Bristowe also showed a more recent photo of herself after the procedure wearing eye makeup with no visible scarring.
"That surgery that I had for my upper bleh was on Dec. 5. It is now Jan. 22," she said at the end of her clip. "The scarring is healing nicely, I just put a little bit of vitamin E oil on. I just also want to say that I am not here to influence you or make you go get one. ... I am just simply being transparent and sharing my journey."
In the comments section of her post, people asked more questions about the procedure, including the cost and where she had it completed. Others commended the Leduc, Alta.-born star on her honesty.
"What's the cost for this?" one person asked, to which Bristowe said it was around $3,400 USD ($4,900 CAD).
"Did they make you stop Botox?" another wondered, where Bristowe noted she "stopped for seven months so that I knew where my lids say naturally."
"Always love your honesty and transparency! What a queen," one person wrote.
"I love your transparency! As a girlie who has also tried to use Botox ... it has also worked negatively," another shared.
At the beginning of December, Bristowe had also been candid about the procedure, sharing several photos from her operation day and recovery, as well as answering a few questions on her Instagram Stories.
The Dancing With The Stars alum shared a carousel of photos and video on Dec. 7, with a caption saying there was "a lot going on at the Bristowe residence." Her post included hospital photos and footage of her two Golden Retrievers, Ramen and Pinot, who also had some health news.
"All three of us have stitches," she wrote. "I got an upper bleph (take it to your group chat if you wanna be negative). Ramen had a fatty tumour removed (please pay for it to come back normal). Pinot had a tooth pulled (he was so high when he came home he had to eat lying down). And my backyard is torn up!! (Which means dogs on leashes every time they have to go, even if it's 3 a.m.)"
Bristowe had also made a few other posts on the social media platform, including one that featured a couple post-operation selfies where she's showing off her stitches. She added one of herself lying in bed at home and another while still at the hospital.
"Don't be ridiculous, Andrea. Everyone wants to look like this," she quipped in that caption, referencing a famous quote from The Devil Wears Prada that Meryl Streep's character, Miranda Priestly, said to Anne Hathaway's character, Andrea Sachs.
On the topic, Bristowe also shared a lighthearted Instagram Reel where she mouthed the words to Ariana Grande's rendition of "Popular," from Wicked. In the clip, Bristowe called out some of the online trolls who have been writing comments saying she needs to stop having plastic surgery. "We all know I'd post about it if I did. My balls my choice," she penned in that caption.
What is a bleph surgery?
According to the Canadian Society of Plastic Surgeons, a blepharoplasty is also called an eyelid lift. Most people seeking this procedure are looking to counter the effects of aging or help correct inherited traits like eye bags.
Cleveland Clinic noted the surgery can involve either the upper or lower eyelids, or both, and should typically only take between 45 minutes and two hours. For a lower blepharoplasty, a surgeon will make an incision just below the eyelash line, or sometimes inside the lower eyelid. For an upper blepharoplasty, like Bristowe had, the surgeon will make an incision in the natural crease of the eyelid to removed excess skin and protruding fat.
After an upper blepharoplasty, stitches in the upper eyelids will remain for around one week. For a lower blepharoplasty, stitches aren't required if the incision was made on the inside of the lids. Swelling and bruising are common during the recovery stage, and patients should expect to stay home for several days to limit their activities amid healing.
