Kaia Gerber addresses 'Nepo Baby' controversy in latest interview

Kaia Gerber is the latest celebrity offspring to weigh in on the 'Nepo Baby' debate and her take is kind of unexpected.

The term, which has been doing the rounds again recently, refers to cases of nepotism in which family members, usually sons and daughters, of famous celebrities have benefitted from the success of their relations.

The idea is that their own careers have advanced exponentially based on the access and connections granted by their parents.

New York Magazine's viral article dove deep into some of Hollywood's most notable nepo babies and recently Hailey Bieber reclaimed her 'Nebo Baby' label, owning it via a tongue-in-cheek slogan tee.

"I won’t deny the privilege that I have," Kaia explained. "My mom always joked, 'If I could call and book a Chanel campaign, it would be for me and not you.' But I also have met amazing people through my mom whom I now get to work with."

She then went on to air her views on the prevalence of nepotism within acting, suggesting that it is less of a powerful force than people make out because "no artist is going to sacrifice their vision for someone’s kid".

"That just isn’t how art is made, and what I’m interested in is art," she continued. "Also, no one wants to work with someone who’s annoying, and not easy to work with, and not kind. Yes, nepotism is prevalent, but I think if it actually was what people make it out to be, we’d see even more of it."

To suggest that nepotism in acting is overblown as a concept? Not everyone is convinced. But fair play to her for acknowledging that her mum's status as an industry icon has 100% helped her progress.

And boy, is she progressing. Her recent runway appearance for Celine at The Wiltern was giving Kate Moss noughties drama and we’re totally here for it…
