Josh Groban Breaks His Instagram Silence After Revealing ‘Sweeney Todd’ Exit
Well, folks, the news is officially out. After close to a year of portraying the main lead in Sweeney Todd, Josh Groban will leave the Broadway show in early 2024.
Fans of the hit musical were shocked when news broke that the Tony Award nominee and his co-star Annaleigh Ashford would play their final performances as Sweeney Todd and Mrs. Lovett on January 14. As the announcement spurred on speculation over who would replace him in the critically acclaimed production, people were anxious to know Josh's feelings on exiting Sweeney Todd after playing such a pivotal role in the revival's commercial success. Well, the singer broke his silence about it on Instagram, sharing a passionate note about how precious this time in his life has been performing on the Great White Way.
"The countdown begins. My heart is heavy but filled with deep gratitude to announce my final performance as Sweeney Todd," he emotionally captioned a photo of him and Annaleigh on October 19. "To hold the torch of this monumental role for all of this year, alongside my dear friend and partner in crime @annaleighashford, has been nothing short of a life changing experience."
He continued: "This brilliant cast and crew and orchestra have given me so many gifts every single day. I will miss sharing Fleet Street with them, but will forever be grateful to have given audiences Sondheim’s masterpiece alongside them these last many months. I will truly cherish and enjoy to the fullest the weeks ahead that I have left. ❤️💈."
While fans of Josh were disappointed to know he'll be holding the famous razor for just a few weeks more, they also made sure to voice to him how they loved seeing his iteration of the Demon Barber of Fleet Street.
"🤍 You are a gift to this world Josh. Let’s enjoy the rest of the time we have in Fleet Street!" one person wrote on Instagram. "Spectacular work @joshgroban! Thank you!" another penned. "You were everything I wanted Sweeney to be and more! It was an honor to see you perform this! Thank you for sharing your talent and doing Sondheim justice!" a different follower added, referencing the composer of Sweeney Todd.
As for who will play Sweeney Todd next, Aaron Tveit is slated for a 12-week run alongside Sutton Foster starting on February 9, which is sure to be a treat in its own right.
