John Legend dedicated his performance of Never Break to his wife Chrissy Teigen after the couple lost their baby a few weeks ago.

Legend said “this is for Chrissy”, before performing on stage in an empty auditorium at the 2020 Billboard Music Awards in LA. His voice came close to cracking as he sang the potent lyrics: "I'm not worried about us and I've never been. We know how the story ends. We will never break."

After the emotional ballad, host Kelly Clarkson praised the pair for being so brave. “I want to take a moment to talk about a friend who inspires me on the daily,” she explained, according to the Evening Standard.

“Not only as a musician, a songwriter, but as a human. John Legend is one of my favourite people on this planet and it’s easy for us all to feel that way about them because he and Chrissy just have this warm way of inviting us into their world, the highs and the lows.”

Teigen shared the tragic news via a moving statement on Instagram, posting a series of powerful pictures of she and Legend cradling their late son, who they called Jack.

“We never decide on our babies’ names until the last possible moment after they’re born, just before we leave the hospital," wrote Teigen. "But we, for some reason, had started to call this little guy in my belly Jack. So he will always be Jack to us. Jack worked so hard to be a part of our little family, and he will be, forever.

“To our Jack - I’m so sorry that the first few moments of your life were met with so many complications, that we couldn’t give you the home you needed to survive. We will always love you.”
