Jodie Turner-Smith Lets Us Into A Sweet Met Gala Moment With 'Gentleman' Joshua Jackson
Whether it’s her performance in the critically-acclaimed romantic road crime drama Queen & Slim, or her latest comedy Murder Mystery 2 opposite Jennifer Aniston, Jodie Turner-Smith has the unique ability to make us bawl our eyes out and belly laugh in equal measure, so powerful are her skills as an actor.
But long before she made her feature film debut in The Neon Demon in 2016, the Peterborough-born actor was best known for her prowess as a model, having appeared in music videos alongside the likes of Zayn Malik and Kanye West. With an astute eye for high fashion and pushing the envelope when it comes to creating red carpet-dominating sartorial and beauty looks, it's no surprise Turner-Smith has quickly become a style muse for legions of fans across the globe, including us here at ELLE UK.
During a recent game of It’s A Mood with us, in which she looked back over some of her most famous fashion moments to date, the June ELLE Cover star began by discussing pregnancy and that Gucci BAFTAs moment at the beginning of the pandemic.
‘I'm wearing Gucci and I am full of child,’ she says on seeing a photo of herself wearing a floor-length sequinned dress to the 2020 BAFTAs. ‘I felt so beautiful wearing that dress, oh, it was such a special time. And it was really special 'cause I was like, “I'm on the carpet with my baby, and she's big enough to kick and let me know that she's enjoying this experience too”.
In April 2020 the actor gave birth to her first child with her husband Joshua Jackson, and has spoken openly about the pregnant body and motherhood. ‘I think the pregnant body is so beautiful,’ she says. ‘And also I gave a special note to Gucci, I was like, "The titties are tittying, so we need to really let them be on display, okay?" Ain't no titty like a pregnant titty, you heard it here first.
‘Pregnancy really I think teaches you to accept your body 'cause you have no control over what's happening,’ she continues. ‘You're actually holding this sacred space, but all of your body image issues can just trip up on the fact that you have no control over what's happening. I feel like pregnancy really taught me to just let go and go with the flow, which I think is a great lesson to incorporate into style. Sometimes you just got to let go and go with the flow. What's your body saying? Wear that.’
In our cover story with the star the Sex Education actor, she discussed attending the Met Gala with her husband for the first time in 2022, at which she wore a short embellished Gucci 1920s flapper-inspired mini dress. ‘I remember there was this moment where my husband just took me by the hand and said, "You deserve to be here",' recalled Turner-Smith.
Discussing the event’s Gilded Age theme that year, she continues: I feel that the theme is often times more of a suggestion, and you can just kind of land where you land. And you know, for us it was like my outfit itself was gilded, so while it didn't come from the Gilded Age, you know, you don't have to be on the nose all the time.’
Looking at images from the night, Turner-Smith remembers ‘feeling herself’ in her silver-hued look. ‘I was like, “Ooh, let me show off this body ody ody,' which I did (chuckles),’ she jokes.
‘But let me tell you about them shoes I was wearing? Not comfortable - they were off as soon as I got to the top of the stairs. I was that girl barefoot in the Met Gala, and I was very happy. You know, one of the best things about going to an event with your husband is that you have an automatic shoe/bag/things carrier. It's amazing. It's like, “Oh babe, I'm tired. Let me hold your stuff." You have this gentleman that's with you the whole time. It's great, I love it. And then you know, your dance partner, you don't have to be looking around for anybody... and he cleans up good, so some eye candy.”
Elsewhere in our video with the star she discusses her almost-missed Balmain denim dress at the Venice Film Festival 2021, and her Christopher John Rogers amfAR Gala rainbow-inspired look, which she wore on her birthday.
‘Put me in a corset, I'm happy. Big skirt with a lot of volume, I'm happy. Train? You had me at “hello”,’ she notes.
Recalling the look, which saw the actor shave her head and dye it bleach blonde, she adds: ‘This was the final look of the festival, and so throughout the festival I'd been cutting my hair off more and more and more. And so by the time we got to the end, I told my hairstylist, I was like, “Right, [for] the last look we're going to shave the head and we're going to bleach it blonde. If I had to describe my style in the three words, I would say “I'm having fun”.
We wouldn't disagree with that.
