Jimmy Kimmel Calls Out the Academy for Snubbing Greta Gerwig During His Oscar Monologue

On Sunday, March 10, Oscar host Jimmy Kimmel poked fun at the Academy in his opening monologue for snubbing Greta Gerwig in the director category. Her major summer hit Barbie starring and produced by Margot Robbie was overlooked for Best Director, though it picked up several nominations elsewhere, including Best Picture.

“Barbie was a monster hit,” Kimmel said. “What a thing, what an achievement. To take a plastic doll nobody even liked anymore...now Barbie's a feminist icon thanks to Greta Gerwig, who many believe deserved to be nominated for Best Director.”

As the audience applauded, Kimmel continued, “Hold on a second. I know you’re clapping but you’re the ones who didn’t vote for her by the way. Don’t act like you had nothing to do with this.”

In January, when Gerwig was overlooked for her work on the film, fans of Barbie were additionally surprised that Robbie didn’t get nominated for Best Actress for her role as the titular character. But as a producer of the film, Robbie is nominated in the Best Picture category, facing off against fellow nominees American Fiction, Anatomy of a Fall, The Holdovers, Killers of the Flower Moon, Maestro, Oppenheimer, Past Lives, Poor Things, and The Zone of Interest.

Her co-star, America Ferrera, was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her part in Barbie, while Ryan Gosling is nominated in the Best Supporting Actor category for his performance as Ken, Barbie’s boyfriend. Gerwig was also recognized for Best Adapted Screenplay, having penned Barbie's script with her husband Noah Baumbach. The film has received eight nomination in total. In February, Gerwig told TIME that it was plenty.

“Of course I wanted it for Margot,” she said. “But I’m just happy we all get to be there together.”
