Jim Carrey Set To Return for 'Sonic the Hedgehog 3'

Jim Carrey is officially returning to the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. Set to reprise his role as the mad scientist Dr. Robotnik for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, the news comes confirmed despite the ending of the second film which saw the scientist fall from a giant robot, which led to audiences assuming a fatal tumble. However, in the end credits of the second sequel, the inability to find the doctor's body, leaving room for a developing story to set the stage for the comeback of Sonic's main antagonist.

Carrey's return was teased on social media by the Paramount studio and with the filmmakers. The first two films garnered a total global box office of almost a billion dollars, sitting at $870.8 million USD. The film has a major video game fan base that stands behind it and its success has led to spinoffs like Knuckles which is set to premiere on Paramount+. Joining Carrey in the cast, the third installment sees additions of Krysten Ritter, Alyla Browne, James Wolk, Sofia Pernas, Cristo Fernández and Jorma Taccone. Returning to the franchise film is Ben Schwartz, Lee Majdoub, Idris Elba, Colleen O’Shaughnessey, Tom Butler, James Marsden and Tika Sumpter.

Jeff Fowler returns as the director of the latest sequel, just like the first tow films. Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher, Toru Nakahara and Hitoshi Okuno will produce the third film. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will open in theaters at the end of the year on December 20, 2024.
