Jenny Beavan’s Oscars 2016 Outfit Causes A Stir, Again

Jenny Beavan may’ve been the subject of Stephen Fry’s ridicule at the BAFTAs recently, but the “Mad Max” costume designer has had the last laugh as she picked up the gong for best costume designer at the Oscars 2016.

But despite her epic win, the designer (who’s also picked up a Tony award in her time in addition to another Oscar for “Room With A View”) has yet again been the subject of discussion thanks to her unconventional dress sense.

Beavan, who Fry famously labelled a “bag lady” just a couple of weeks ago, ditched the ballgown to rock up to the Oscars in Hollywood last night in a leather jacket and trousers. And so what? She may not grace any best dressed lists anytime soon, but she felt comfortable and looked happy - as well as taking stuffy Oscars attendees down a notch or two.

“I don’t do frocks and absolutely don’t do heels, I have a bad back,” she told The Telegraph, following her win. “I look ridiculous in a beautiful gown. This was a homage to Mad Max and I obviously didn’t get it quite right at the Baftas, the scarf was meant to be an oil rag.”

Beavan picked up her jacket from trusty Marks & Spencer and had some Swarovski embellishment added onto the back, which, she explained was her idea of dressing up.

“What another lovely day. If our executive producer from Scotland hadn’t asked me what I was doing at the moment I wouldn’t honestly be standing here,” Beavan said as she picked up her gong.

“We had the most amazing crew, I thought the names were going on the screen but honestly if anyone wants to know about any of them, contact me.

“It was an incredible experience…It could be horribly prophetic, Mad Max, if we stopped being kind to each other and kept polluting the atmosphere.”
