Bona fide beauty icon Jennifer Lopez has just inspired our looks once more – but this time not with her cascading honey toned hair or that 'JLo glow' her complexion radiates. Instead, it's the star's nails we're coveting.

Attending the recent Ralph Lauren spring/summer 2023 show, Lopez showcased the most wearable (and affordable) nail polish for this autumn/winter: Essie's Nail Colour 50 Bordeaux Nail Polish, £7.19 – the perfect deep, dark red.

"Beautiful, classic, minimalist was the vibe" for the occasion, her nail artist and friend, Tom Bachik explained on Instagram. To complement Lopez's outfit (a black pinstripe dress by Ralph Lauren), this chic nail polish lent into the timelessness and strength of the look.

The shape was purposeful, too. "Short strong natural shaped nails helps the colour pop," he explained of the manicure, which signals a departure from her usual aesthetic that's longer and almond in shape.

Overall, the look feels right for this season as we transition into colder temperatures and warmer clothes, and towards the festivities of coming months. If, like Lopez, you've been a fan of 'milky nails' – the trend for semi-transparent, pared-back but polished natural nails – switching to dark red will make a similarly chic alternative for autumn.

Another autumnal shade we're into this year is taupe, an elegant dark grey-brown (see Bachik's manicure on Selena Gomez, below, for reference).

Essie is our go-to brand for this shade, too, via its Nail Colour 77 Chinchilly Nail Polish. Also priced at just £7.19, it's worth buying both and having them on rotation.

If you want a pro finish like the A-listers, heed Bachik's advice and prep first with a base coat before applying "two thin, even coats" of colour, then set with the Essie Gel Setter "to protect and create that high gloss red carpet shine". To finish he applies the brand's Cuticle Oil Apricot Treatment to rehydrate the cuticles.
