From her Golden Globe-winning role in Alias, to our favourite teen-turned-30-year-old Jenna in 13 Going on 30, to a superhero assassin in Daredevil, Jennifer Garner has become one of our Hollywood staples.

Despite us wanting a million more Garner rom-coms, in recent years the actress has turned her focus from the big screen to her activist work for Save the Children and becoming best friends with legendary chef, Barefoot Contessa. In short, she's living her best life.

Despite her low maintenance make-up routine, there is one thing the Valentine's Day star is diligent with when it comes to beauty: her hair.

Garner sat down with ELLE to give us the details on her must-have beauty products, why she owes her great skin to 20 years of facials and her love of cheese (same Jennifer, same).

I hit the sack at...

... as early as possible after getting my kids to bed – 10pm? 9.30pm, if I’m lucky.

I wake up at...

...5.15am.

The first thing that passes my lips is...

...black coffee.

The last thing that passes my lips is...

...spearmint tea.

My make-up routine...

...takes me four minutes. I use concealer, Chanel Stylo Sourcils Waterproof Defining Longwear Eyebrow Pencil, Stila Convertible Color blush on my cheeks and Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Lip Care.

My exercise routine...

...is a mix: dance cardio and a weights regime by Simone de la Rue. I try to box at least once a week, too.

I deal with stress by...

... working out and laughing with my friends. As well as cooking or baking, it helps to write down how I’m feeling. Oh, and going to church.

My greatest beauty discovery...

... less is more when it comes to make-up.

When I look in the mirror, I see...

...my skin. I like to check it first to see if it’s looking healthy. I try not to look in the mirror very much – it’s easier not to pick myself apart if I’m not focused on it.

I feel happiest when...

...having a plan, even when it’s hard. Being in a community with other people makes me happy.

I feel saddest when...

...focusing on the world’s problems without finding a way to be part of the solution. I try to be a piece in the puzzle.

The last beauty item I bought?

Cryo Sticks. They’re metal tools that you keep in the fridge and use to massage your face to soothe skin and promote blood flow.

My fridge is filled with...

... almond pulp from making almond milk. I always have baking basics in there too: butter and milk. And good cheese. I love a good cheese.

My body is...

... essential. We have to use it or lose it, so I keep up the hard workouts. I’m grateful to my body for keeping going.

My biggest beauty indulgence is...

... 20 years of facials by Nerida Joy. She knows everything about skin, so I trust her.

The best beauty advice I've ever received...

... Virtue hair care is a game changer. I use a mask once a week in winter and when I’m working and using heat on my hair. People focus on using a mask or moisturiser on their face but forget that their hair needs the same kind of love.

The last beauty treatment I had was...

...having my nails done at work. I haven’t done a lot of kooky treatments!

To me, vanity is...

...unnecessary.
