Wednesday star Jenna Ortega says she turned down the famous role "a couple times" before finally accepting it.

Speaking to The Sunday Times, Ortega said that, when she was initially approached via email about playing Wednesday Addams in the show, she turned it down.

"I got the email, passed on it," Ortega explained, adding that she wanted to focus her attention on making movies, having starred in the Disney Channel show Stuck in the Middle since she was 13.

"I had done so much TV in my life, all I've ever wanted to do is film."

Admitting that she finally agreed to take on the role after meeting with director and executive producer Tim Burton, Ortega said she still said no "a couple times" more.

"The only reason I went back is because Tim is such a legend, and we just happened to get along very well. But even then I said, 'Ah, no – I think I’m OK,' a couple times."

After taking on the lead role of Wednesday Addams last year, the Netflix series became a huge hit.

"I didn’t expect the reaction," Ortega said, adding that her fellow cast members weren't expecting much of the series. "So I thought it wasn’t going to be watched. That it will be a nice little gem that someone finds, but…"

Recently the young star opened up about starring in the series admitting that she was "unprofessional in a sense" when it came to changing the script.

"There were times on that set where I even became unprofessional in a sense where I just started changing lines".

"The script supervisor thought I was going with something, and then I would have to sit down with the writers and they’d be like, 'Wait, what happened to the scene?' And I would have to go through and explain why I couldn't do certain things."

Wednesday streams on Netflix – season 2 has been confirmed.
