Jason Aldean continues to defend Try That in a Small Town following controversy
Jason Aldean has doubled down on defending his song Try That in a Small Town.
During an appearance on the Coop's Rockin' Country Saturday Night podcast, the country singer continued to defend his 2023 track following criticism that its lyrics and music video promote gun violence and racism.
"If you've got common sense, you can look at the video and see, I'm not saying anything that's not true," Jason argued. "In the video, I'm showing you what happened - I didn't do it, I didn't create it - it just happened, and I saw it, and I'm not cool with it."
The music video for Try That in a Small Town was removed from country music channel CMT over its inclusion of clips of Black Lives Matter protests and footage of Jason performing outside a courthouse where a Black man was lynched.
"The biggest issue, I think, people had when we released the song was that it mentioned 'having a gun that my grandfather gave me'. I mentioned a gun, that's a 'no, no' right now," the singer continued on the podcast. "I just remember thinking, 'Man, you guys haven't even seen the video yet.'"
Some of the lyrics featured in the song include, "Got a gun that my granddad gave me, they say one day they're gonna round up, well, that s**t might fly in the city, good luck."
Jason previously defended the song at a concert in Ohio.
"You can think something all you want to, it doesn't mean it's true. What I am is a proud American," he said at the time. "I want to see it restored to what it once was before all this bulls**t started happening to us. I love my country, I love my family and I will do anything to protect that."
