James Haskell has addressed why he and Chloe Madeley really split up, following claims it was a publicity stunt to promote their family show.

The former couple announced their separation back in October 2023, five years after they tied the knot.

Since their split, both have vowed that they get on better as friends and co-parents to their two-year-old daughter Bodhi.

Sharing his version of events about their break-up in a new interview, James said the pair simply stopped getting along.

"My thing is, we split up because we didn't get on anymore, and that's it, that's the end of it," he said on the Spooning with Mark Wogan podcast.

"There's no like nefarious thing. Chloe, look the out of context language and the stuff the media writes, that's her use of language.

"Chloe is overtly honest about things like that, the honest answer is we didn't get on and that's why we separated. There's no like malicious [reason]."

He went on to say that their decision was also essential to their daughter, to ensure she has "the best possible life".

James and Chloe announced their split shortly after they filmed for the ITV series Chloe Madeley: A Family Affair.

In the documentary, the pair gave fans an honest insight into their relationship which included spending some time apart, due to James' DJ career.

Separating before its release, the 39-year-old said many believed it was a publicity stunt.

Shutting down these claims, he added: "The show was going to go out after we decided to separate, so while we were doing it, we were fine.

"When we were post that period of time, we were [like] listen this isn't where we can continue.

"Four months after that, it comes out, so the time scales are weird and it looks like a publicity stunt, people thought we were faking it."

Chloe, the daughter of presenters Richard Madeley and Judy Finnigan, has previously described the final year of their marriage as "awful, dark [and] painful", but says she will never go into full details about it.

Speaking to The Sun, she added of their split: "I think more people should see it as a positive thing. I'm so proud of myself and so relieved that I actually called it a day."
