James Corden lifts lid on ‘real life’ Gavin & Stacey - including if they stayed together
James Corden has recalled where he got the idea for iconic sitcom Gavin & Stacey has been revealed all on the real life story.
Fans of the hit BBC show have been left emotional since the last ever episode aired on Christmas Day. Since then fans were given the chance to say a final farewell to the comedy with BBC documentary A Fond Farewell, which aired on New Year’s Day.
The documentary offered a glimpse at the making of the long-awaited finale, as well as taking a look back at the show over the past 17 years.
James, who is well known for his iconic role as Smithy, spoke of a real-life friend named Gavin who met his wife in a similar way to Gavin Shipman played by Mathew Horne on screen.

Referring to the real couple, the 46-year-old said: “My mate Gavin met his girlfriend because he worked in sales and she worked in accounts but they used to speak on the phone.
"He was like, 'I'm just chatting to this girl at work and we just ended up on the phone for hours' and then he said to me, 'I'm gonna meet her this weekend' and I was like, 'What?! They ended up having a frivolous weekend and coming back and [he was] going 'I'm in love with her!'" The pair stayed together and James told Ruth that they got married.
The final episode of Gavin & Stacey concluded with on/off lovers Smithy and Nessa finally declaring their love for one another and tying the knot, but not without a few hiccups along the way.
Smithy was originally set to wed his girlfriend Sonia after it was revealed he'd never given an answer to Nessa's proposal, which provided the cliff hanger to the show's 2019 Christmas Special.
Smithy realised that he was making a mistake and went on to declare his love for Nessa, In an emotional scene, Smithy and Nessa got married and the show ended with an emotional montage of the family marking the occasion.
Gavin & Stacey: The Finale drew in a whopping 12.5 million viewers and it became the most watched show on Christmas Day.
