James Carville and Mary Matalin’s Former New Orleans Mansion Lists for $3.7 Million

A southern mansion with political ties just came to market in New Orleans.

Built in 1906, the Colonial-style home on Palmer Avenue was bought for $2.25 million in 2008 by married American political consultants James Carville and Mary Matalin. The two met in 1992, while Matalin was deputy director for President George H.W. Bush, and Carville served as a key strategist to Bill Clinton. While on opposite political teams, the two married a year later and have been making the rounds ever since. Their inviting former residence in the Big Easy can now be yours for a cool $3.7 million. Eleanor Farnsworth of Latter & Blum holds the listing.

The formal dining room features a hand-painted mural and beautiful woodwork.

The five-bedroom abode sits by Audubon Park, where majestic live oaks sprawl out next to tennis courts and jogging paths. Through a gated entry, the front door is tucked behind a wicked-green set of folding doors. The sprawling 8,279-square-foot abode’s elegance becomes immediately apparent in the entrance hall and foyer, where period details like the grand staircase make a statement next to eye-catching cornices and millwork.

Ceilings up to 13 feet high throughout the residence make its entertaining spaces, complete with Italian plaster friezes and original pocket doors, appear fit for royalty. Guests will find the formal dining room’s hand-painted mural of Audubon Park to be the ultimate icebreaker, along with the gorgeous woodwork, from the fireplace to the trim around windows and doors, all illuminated by classic light fixtures.

The heated saltwater pool and spa are surrounded by lush greenery.

Picturesque windows in the chef’s kitchen fill it with natural light and afford owners views of windmill palm trees as they cook meals at the Lacanche range or relax at the stone-top breakfast bar island. Upstairs, the bedrooms feel a bit dated, but one of them scores points for character with an exposed brick wall and a glossy green ceiling. The finished third floor features a home office, guest quarters, and an entertaining space with a wet bar.

The private backyard is a tropical oasis, letting out onto a covered terrace with alfresco dining space. A summer kitchen with Viking appliances is also found here, flanked by lush foliage with a view of the heated saltwater pool with fountains.

The sellers bought the home from Carville and Matalin in 2021 for $3.3 million. Carville, the focus of HBO Max’s recently released Carville: Winning Is Everything, Stupid, celebrated his 80th birthday in October.
