Yesterday, Buckingham Palace announced that Princess Eugenie and long-term partner Jack Brooksbank are the second royal couple set to tie the knot this year.

And the surprise engagement took place earlier this month while the pair were on holiday in Nicaragua.

Yet despite Brooksbank choosing a colour-catching padparadscha sapphire engagement ring, he didn’t end up proposing with it.

The 31-year-old revealed in an interview with the BBC, “I found a ring in a jeweller’s, and then proposed to Eugenie without it”, as he decided to wait for the princess to ‘sign off’ on it.

When the newly-engaged couple returned from their holiday, they collaborated on the design and decided to surround the colour-catching stone in diamonds.

“Why I loved it so much is it changes colour from every different angle that you look at it, which is what I think of Eugenie, that she changes colour, and it’s just so amazing,” Brooksbank added.

But even without a ring, the couple’s engagement was an ‘incredible moment’ according to Princess Eugenie.

“The lake was so beautiful,” the 27-year-old recalled. “The light was just a special light that I’ve never seen. I was over the moon, crying.”

The couple will follow in Prince Harry and Meghan Markle‘s footsteps, as they plan to wed this autumn at St George’s Chapel in Windsor.

And Princess Eugenie’s grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, is thrilled with the news.

“Granny actually knew right at the beginning,” she admitted, according to The Telegraph. “We left her this weekend [after a visit to Sandringham], and had a lovely time. She was very happy, as was my grandfather.”
