Inspector Morse creator Colin Dexter dies aged 86
The crime writer Colin Dexter, creator of the much-loved character Inspector Morse, has died at the age of 86.
A statement from his publisher, Macmillan, said: "With immense sadness, Macmillan announces the death of Colin Dexter, who died peacefully at home in Oxford this morning."
He was best known for penning the Oxford-set crime novels, which spawned the long-running ITV television series Inspector Morse – which featured a memorable performance from John Thaw in the title role – and spin-offs Endeavour and Lewis.
Fans of Dexter's 13 Morse novels (a 1993 short story collection also featured the character) have taken to social media to express their sadness at the author's death.
Farewell wonderful Colin. Thankyou for your rich characters, your mischief and for being the best dinner companion anyone could wish for.
