While the regular schedule of fashion month continues to churn on, many of the leading fashion houses are increasingly opting to show outside of the traditional four cities (New York, London, Milan and Paris), instead preferring to host standalone spectacles that truly demonstrate their influence and pulling power. Last night, Versace decamped to Los Angeles, staging an al fresco catwalk show at the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood – strategically diarised the same week as the Oscars.
Naturally, this made for an exceptionally starry crowd – both on and off the catwalk. Kendall Jenner closed the show, one of only two runway appearances she's made this season, and was joined by a host of fashion heavyweights, including Naomi Campbell, Gigi Hadid, Irina Shayk and Emily Ratajkowski. The front row was a veritable who's who of Hollywood, with the likes of Anne Hathaway, Cher and Miley Cyrus rubbing shoulders with Pamela Anderson, Lily James, Simone Ashley and Paris Hilton.
As for the fashion, it was as high-octane as one might expect, with plenty of fierce tailoring, corseted gowns and draped silk dresses, all finished with glittering embellishments and accessorised with Versace's ubiquitous higher-than-high heels. The finale featured a selection of powerful black dresses, in every style, cut and silhouette imaginable.
"It’s exciting. It’s a very good challenge," Donatella Versace told us in our exclusive interview ahead of the show, admitting that she was nervous. "At fashion week, everybody else shows, so you are one of them. There, [in LA], it’s going to be only me. All the attention– if people pay attention – is on this show. I feel I cannot fail. I have to do this perfect."
