Inside the luxurious filming location for the third season of 'The White Lotus'
Good news for fans of The White Lotus, the HBO series beloved for the way it chronicles the magnificent monstrosity of the super-rich guests staying at a five-star luxury hotel chain. The drama has always been filmed in Four Seasons resorts: the first series in the Hawaii outpost (the Maui at Wailea) and the second in Sicily’s Taormina (the San Domenico Palace). The third, which airs next year, recently wrapped shooting at the Four Seasons hotel on the spectacular Thai island of Koh Samui. What will unfold over rum cocktails by the serenity pool, in the ocean-facing super-suites or at the Secret Garden spa remains to be seen, and is tightly shrouded in mystery, but in the meantime, viewers who can’t wait might want to make a rather special reservation themselves.
To celebrate the now-official partnership between the high-camp, high-drama show and the Four Seasons, life will begin to imitate fiction as the resorts are transformed by White-Lotus-themed takeovers. Real-life guests can step into the shoes of characters like Belinda, Daphne, Portia or Jennifer Coolidge’s inimitable Tanya – though presumably the in-house staff are hoping they won’t also take on the White Lotus gang’s attitude towards hotel employees. Inspired by key themes and plotlines in the third season, several outposts will be holding immersive dinners (anything could happen around that banqueting table after dark) and inviting guests to sample spa treatments akin to those of the fictional visitors.
“The White Lotus has always been about blending authentic beauty and culture with compelling storytelling, which makes our partnership with Four Seasons an ideal fit,” says Pia Barlow, the executive vice president of Originals Marketing at HBO and Max. “We’re excited to create unforgettable moments that resonate both on and off the screen.”
At Koh Samui, for example, you may want to partake in the Secret Night Ritual involving four-hand healing, Tibetan singing bowls, and a warm lava shell massaged followed by an aromatic soak in a bath scented by coconut and, of course, lotus petals.
Meanwhile, over in California, the recently revamped Westlake Village outpost will, to celebrate the new episodes dropping, be holding a theatrical event over several days. No spoilers – like the storyline, all will be revealed nearer the time – but guests are guaranteed to be met with all the high jinks, high stakes and high-net-worth individuals that we love so much in show itself.
“Formalising our partnership with HBO and Max marks an exciting milestone in our journey together, embracing a cultural phenomenon that blends exceptional storytelling with the universal love of travel,” says Marc Speichert, the executive vice president and chief commercial officer at Four Seasons. “Mike White and his team have created something truly special. For many Four Seasons guests, especially our pop-culture enthusiasts and travel trendsetters, The White Lotus serves as the perfect travel inspiration. After showcasing the beauty of Maui and then our breathtaking Taormina property, we're excited to celebrate Koh Samui in the third season of this beloved show.”
