The final episode was a two-hour long special and the pair pulled out all the stops in the finale. Ant and Dec thrilled the audience by dishing out more Takeaway Getaways. They had a bumper edition of Ring My Bell, and the final Ant vs Dec - where Dec won at penalty shootouts.

As the show reached its end and before rolling out a reel of special memories of the show, Dec said: "When we started this back in 2002, we thought we'd be lucky if we got to do this for maybe a couple of years, so what's happened has honestly been beyond our wildest dreams.

"We have truly adored every second of making this show, but there's one thing we've never, ever forgotten, and that's the fact that it's not our show, it's your show, so we'd like to say a massive thank you to you, our incredible audience."

Ant and Dec then performed ‘It’s All About You’ with McFly’s Tom Fletcher and Danny Jones.

Some snaps of the afterparty were shared which saw Cheryl Cole embracing X-Factor co-star Simon in a hug. This Morning ’s Alison Hammond took a selfie with Dermot O’Leary and Davina McCall.

Kaiser Chiefs lead singer Ricky Wilson also took part in the celebrations and Girls Aloud made sure to have a picture with Davina after hosting the final show.

Addressing the reason behind the decision to end the series earlier this week, Dec told viewers on This Morning: “When we first came to the decision to rest it, we did it because 20 series feels like a good time to do it, and we told our management first.

"We said we want to rest it and do other stuff, but we reserve the right between now and the end to change our minds several times - and we have! But I think we know in our heart of hearts that it’s the right thing to do both for the show and for us personally.”
