Incredible Plane-Shaped Car That Broke Land Speed Record In 1965 Goes Up For Sale

A plane-shaped car with a turbojet engine, capable of hitting 600 mph, is heading to auction. The Spirit of America Sonic I, designed by racer Craig Breedlove, set a land speed record of 600.601 mph. Its sleek, 34-foot design, inspired by a Coca-Cola bottle, features a cockpit-style seat. Breedlove's fastest run took place on Utah's Bonneville Salt Flats on November 15, 1965. Sponsored by Goodyear, it features forged aluminium wheels with special tyres. Breedlove's wife, Lee, set a women's land speed record of 308.506 mph in the same car. The car has been in the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum collection since 1975. RM Sotheby will auction it in Miami in February 2025, estimated at $500,000–$1,000,000.
