The impact on your body of just one day of binge eating is actually quite scary

A new study in the journal Nutrients assessed the blood sugar levels of 15 fairly healthy people after feeding them a diet of high fat foods for a day. The likes of sausage, bacon, fried foods, burgers and cheesecakes were on the menu, and while this sounds like a pretty dreamy scenario, the outcome wasn't so great.

Following the participant's day of binge eating, in which they consumed approximately 78% more calories than they would on a standard day, researchers compared their new blood sugar readings to those the day before. It was discovered that the participant's sensitivity to insulin - the hormone which allows your cells to turn the sugar in your blood into energy - had dramatically decreased.

In fact, insulin sensitivity appeared to have diminished by 28% across all the subjects of the study, meaning their bodies required more insulin to absorb the sugar into their systems. And this is potentially concerning, because long-term this could lead to the development of diabetes, which is when your insulin no longer functions and your blood sugar levels remain high.

What's worrying about these findings is the indication that just one day of eating a high calorie, high fat diet can impact the effectiveness of insulin. So what must we be doing to our bodies if we sustain this kind of intake in food?
