5 steps to get your home winter-ready Rachel Whiting / House Beautiful

As the nights draw in and temperatures plummet, creating a warm, inviting space to hunker down becomes essential. Lisa Williams, executive housekeeper at five-star hotel, The Grand, York, shares her professional insights on how to get your home winter-ready.

1. Deep clean carpets and rugs

Lisa emphasises the importance of a seasonal deep clean to prevent bad smells and keep allergens at bay. 'Carpets and rugs should be shampooed, vacuumed and steam-cleaned to remove dust, allergens and dirt buildup. This is particularly important in the colder winter months as windows are kept closed most of the time, trapping more particles indoors,' she explains.

2. Dust and clean vents and radiators

Heating is essential during colder months, but dusty radiators and vents can reduce efficiency. 'To ensure proper heating in your home, clear all vents, radiators and air filters of dust and other particles for efficient airflow,' says Lisa. This also prevents the unpleasant ‘burning dust’ smell and reduces allergens during flu season.

3. Wash windows and sills

Maximise natural light on gloomy days by cleaning your windows. Dirt and dust on windows, frames and sills can dull a room. 'For a homemade window cleaning solution, mix two litres of water and a teaspoon of dishwashing liquid in a bucket. Alternatively, you can also use vinegar and warm water and wipe across the window with a clean cloth,' suggests Lisa, who was awarded Housekeeper of the Year at the prestigious 2022 Catey Awards, known as the Oscars of the hospitality world.

4. Install winter essentials

Lisa recommends adding practical touches to make your home more winter-friendly. 'If you have a particular room that is prone to feeling cold and damp, investing in a dehumidifier is a fantastic option and can make a huge difference to the feel of the space,' she says. 'Keeping rooms draught-free can also help, so draught excluders for internal doors are a must.' And don't forget to place heavy duty doormats and boot scrapers at entrances to keep mud at bay.

5. Embrace seasonal touches

Finally, infuse your home with seasonal charm. Swap in winter foliage or seasonal flowers, light candles with warming scents like cinnamon or clove, and switch soft furnishings to richer hues and cosy textures. While cleaning is important, it’s the seasonal touches that truly make your home feel ready for the colder months.
