'I'm a dog groomer - here's how to avoid the little things that can hurt your pet's feelings'
Dogs may not express their emotions the same way humans do, but they are deeply sensitive creatures that can feel hurt, anxious, or stressed by certain behaviors. While some actions might seem harmless or unintentional, they can have a lasting impact on your pet’s well-being.
Neglecting your dog's need for routine and social interaction can result in anxiety and fear. As social animals, dogs thrive on attention, and ignoring them can lead to depression and disruptive behavior.
In a recent TikTok post, dog trainer @dogstraining69 highlighted some actions that could potentially hurt your dog’s feelings, shedding light on how certain behaviors can affect their well-being, the Express reports.

Pushing your dog away
Repeatedly pushing your dog away can create a sense of rejection, causing them to withdraw and become less affectionate. Over time, they may start to feel as though they’ve done something wrong simply by wanting to be close to you.
Shouting at your dog
According to the dog trainer, yelling at your dog does more harm than good. It doesn’t teach them anything and only causes fear and anxiety.
Instead, the expert recommends using short, clear commands paired with rewards. Consistency in both tone and wording is key to effective training, helping your dog feel secure and understand what’s expected.
Interrupting their quiet time
Disturbing your dog while they’re resting can create anxiety, disrupt their sleep patterns, and leave them startled. Likewise, using your dog’s crate as a form of punishment can cause distress, turning what should be a safe, comforting space into something they fear.
The dog trainer suggests making the crate an inviting environment by placing toys or treats inside. This approach helps create a positive association, encouraging your dog to view it as a place they’ll want to return to, rather than avoid.
Overwhelming them with strong scents
Dogs have a heightened sensitivity to strong smells, making cleaning products and perfumes potentially harmful. These substances can be toxic to pets, triggering allergies or irritating their skin.
Being inconsistent with them
Dogs thrive on routines, and consistent rules and boundaries help them feel secure. Disrupting their feeding or walking schedule can cause confusion and lead to erratic behavior. Similarly, taking their food away while they're still eating can upset them, making mealtime a stressful experience.
Forgetting their grooming needs
Neglecting your dog’s grooming routine can lead to irritation, infections, and even painful long nails that affect their walking. However, grooming should always be a calm and positive experience—rewarding your dog during and after will help them associate it with something enjoyable.
Laughing at your dog's fears
Laughing at your dog when they're frightened may seem harmless, but it can actually damage their trust in you. This behavior can make them feel insecure and less likely to turn to you for comfort in the future.
Petting their head
It may surprise you, but not all dogs enjoy having their heads petted. For some, it can feel intimidating or even frightening. If your dog shows signs of discomfort, respect their boundaries and give them the space they need, just as you would with another person.
