The IKEA Bicycle Is Finally Here

Next time you head to IKEA to purchase a bookshelf, cooking utensils, or storage boxes, you can also grab a new bike. Last year, the Swedish retailer announced that it was going to add a bicycle to its inventory of stylish, affordable decor items—and now, it’s finally available.

Like all IKEA products, the SLADDA bicycle is practical with a sleek and modern design. It has a lightweight aluminum frame, oil-free belt drive, disc brake, and a bell integrated in the hand brake. The frame is also rustproof to withstand any everyday wear and tear.

Product developers and designers first came up with an idea for a bicycle in a workshop—they spent three days observing commuters who used bikes to get around different cities. As a result, the SLADDA bicycle is a low-maintenance bike that’s perfect for commuters, especially those who live in places where owning a car isn’t a necessity and can sometimes be a burden.

The bicycle retails for $499 for both the 26- and 28-inch versions. There are also a variety of accessories (sold separately) that you can use to customize your bike for your everyday life. A front rack ($35) or rear rack ($25) can add some extra storage space for your workbag or groceries. A bike bag ($30) can be easily attached and also converts into a backpack. Plus, for larger loads, you can purchase the trailer for $169 (it can be hand-towed as well). Other smaller accessories like a helmet, u-lock, and helmet are available, too.

While the bike is just now available to the public, it’s already won two design awards: a Red Dot Design Award and a 2016 GOOD DESIGN Award. If you’re in the market for a set of wheels, go to ikea.com to purchase now, or head to stores in February to take one home.
