Known for her tailored ensembles and wow-factor frocks, the late Princess of Wales was one of the most prominent fashion icons of the 90s, with a wardrobe fit to burst with outfits fashioned by UK designers – that other celebrities couldn’t wait to copy.

Her style was virtually unrivalled and a new exhibition will give her loyal fans a chance to explore the rules of her much-imitated style and peruse some of her most famous frocks, which had the power to set trends worldwide.

Three of Diana’s dresses will be displayed as part of the “Fashion Rules: Restyled” expo at Kensington Palace next month, including the iconic green velvet dress that she wore privately for a photoshoot with Mario Testino.

The Catherine Walker design was one of Diana’s most sleek and signature evening gowns, boasting a tailored cut, halter neck and double-breasted styling.

Diana’s much-copied tartan and black velvet evening gown, which was designed for an evening of Scottish dancing at Balmoral, will also be on display as will a one-shouldered navy column dress, trimmed with gold cord.

Dresses worn by the Queen and her younger sister, Princess Margaret, will also be showcased exploring the “New Look” glamour of Princess Margaret in the 1950s and the elegance of Her Majesty in the 1960s and 1970s.

An exquisite late 1940s candy striped dress created for Margaret by royal couturier Norman Hartnell in the Paris style will be displayed alongside silk scarves and sunglasses from designers such as Yves Saint Laurent and Christian Dior.

In contrast, the stunning outfits worn by the Queen include formal dresses created for state visits to France and the Middle East, and for engagements as diverse as an investiture in Pakistan and a world film premiere in London’s Leicester Square.

They also reveal the special considerations in dressing as a monarch. The gowns are bold in colour to stand out in a crowd and are carefully designed to allow for the wearing of insignia.
