I wear a size 16 to 18 — here's everything I bought from Old Navy for fall and winter

I just bought a ton of stuff from Old Navy — here are my favourite picks for fall and winter, from just $9.

It's my favourite time of year for clothes shopping — fall fashion just hits differently. As a plus-size person, planning your fall wardrobe can feel daunting. I love fashion and pay attention to the trends, but as someone who wears sizes 16-18, not all trends feel accessible to me. I want to step out in 90s-inspired tops, cozy maxi skirts, comfortable corduroy, and jeans that actually fit. Luckily, Old Navy exists and for me and my fellow plus-size fashion girls, it has a ton of cute stuff for fall. I went a little crazy at Old Navy and bought a ton of styles that will be perfect for fall and winter. To see (and shop) my haul, scroll below.

The winner for the softest top in my closet goes to this Pointelle Top. It’s stretchy, it’s cozy and the knit detail and lettuce hem give it that 90s aesthetic I’m always on the hunt for. The inspiration for my fall wardrobe this year is Nicole Kidman in Practical Magic, and I think this top is spot-on. I picked it up in a large, hoping for a more fitted and cropped look, but due to the buttons pulling a little in the bust, I would consider going up to an XL. Overall — I'm obsessed!

This is my first foray into the barrel pant trend, and I think I’m into it. These pants aren’t a true barrel leg, but if you love wide-leg pants (which I do!), these might fit the bill. I did expect them to be a little more cropped than they are (for reference, I’m 5’ 4”), and I also wish they came in black. I could see these transitioning well from meetings with clients to casual weekends at the farmers’ market — I never turn down a versatile pant.

If you're new to Old Navy, there are some things to pay attention to — one of them being how they describe the rise of their pants. High-waisted vs. extra high-waisted can make a real difference, especially if you like your pants to sit right under your ribcage like I do. I love the colour of these pants; the corduroy is incredibly soft, and I’m very fond of the look of the wide leg — but they just might not be as high-waisted as I want. Even though I would prefer a higher waist, I can’t wait to wear these pants during the holiday season.

No matter the season, I wear maxi skirts several times a week. I own roughly 12 maxi skirts at this point, and I was drawn to this one in particular because of how fitted and stretchy it is. I usually opt for more of an A-line silhouette, but this skirt has made me a convert to the pencil skirt. Not only am I obsessed with how it looks, but this skirt is very comfortable, and the side slit still allows me to wear my favourite anti-chafing shorts without having them peek out. I love the look of a tight skirt like this with a boxy T-shirt or sweater on top, which is what led to what I added to my cart next.

In full transparency: I ordered this shirt in black and once I had it on my body, I instantly ordered it in two more colours. I wear a size 16 to 18 and an E-cup bra, so finding a shirt that is actually oversized is no small feat — and even though I sized down to a large, I think I’ve finally found my perfect boxy top. I have yet to find a skirt or pant that this top doesn’t look great with, and it’s become my go-to basic in recent weeks. The 100 per cent cotton fabric feels great on my skin, and after several washes, the quality and comfort remain unchanged.

If it wasn’t obvious, my fall wardrobe only consists of things that you would find in a 90’s vampire slayer’s closet and I thought this top met all the criteria. I also ordered it in a large and its super stretchy cotton blend material makes for a great fit. Unlike the other button-down top I purchased, I found that the buttons on this top didn't pull much — a win for any large-chested person.

Old Navy is helping me heal my inner teenager who never had a positive jean-shopping experience. The high-waist, the wide leg, the rips, the wash, the stretch — these jeans are a 10 out of 10 for me! I ordered them in my typical size 16 and found that they’re true to size. They’re also offered in a ton of different washes, with many of the colours coming in regular, tall, and petite lengths.

Try not to get confused; these jeans may have the same name as the previous pair, but they’re completely different. I was drawn to these jeans because of their unique two-tone wash. Unlike the other pair of jeans, they don’t contain any stretch and a size 16 in their regular length is both a little too big and a little too long for me. These pants are also a heavier denim, which I know I’ll be reaching for as the temperatures dip in the coming months.
