I tried this ergonomic pillow and my neck pain is 'practically gone' — and it's 56% off right now

Do cervical pillows help with neck and shoulder pain? Here's what an expert says.

I have two young boys and between being their human pillow and carrying them on my back for "one more piggyback," I can’t remember the last time I’ve gone an entire week without shoulder and neck pain.

Add in the fact that I’m a writer habitually hunched over a computer, and my poor back is a complete mess. On top of everything, I'm a side sleeper who loves a soft-down pillow, which means I get very little support while I sleep.

All this to say, when I read about Amazon Canada's bestselling MKicesky Cervical Support Pillow, I was immediately intrigued. After buying the pillow and sleeping on it for a few weeks, I can confidently say that it's been one of my best buying decisions to date. A board-certified orthopedic spine surgeon I spoke with even said that supportive pillows like this one are “particularly good” for back and neck pain sufferers. Better still: It's 56 per cent off on Amazon right now, even though October Prime Day is long gone.

Side and back sleepers will appreciate the benefits of this bestselling memory foam pillow.

Pros
  • Very comfortable and supportive
  • Two different height sides
  • Greatly reduced neck and shoulder pain after the first week of use
Cons
  • Takes a little bit of getting used to, especially for anyone who is used to a soft down pillow
$44 (originally $100) at Amazon

This ergonomic neck support pillow is designed especially for side and back sleepers. It helps maintain the natural physiological curvature of the spine and greatly improves sleep quality by relieving stress on the shoulders and neck.

The pressure-relieving memory foam easily adjusts to your body's unique shape and is constructed with a Greenguard Gold-certified core, guaranteeing the product is free from harmful chemicals so you and those you love sleep safely.

The pillow also features two neck support levels for a more customized sleep. Its high side provides shoulder support, while its low side helps maintain a more neutral spine.

The ice-silk breathable pillow cover is easy to unzip and remove. Just throw it in the wash, and you're all set.

Its high-quality pillowcase material also allows for constant cooling, dissipating heat and providing more temperature control.

Not sure if this pillow is for you? No problem. You can test it out for 101 nights, and if you don't love it, you can return it for a full refund.

Suffer from headaches? Snoring up a storm? This pillow may also provide some relief from both.

My neck pain is gone: I have been using this pillow for a couple of weeks, and my neck pain is practically gone. I often wake up in almost the same position I fell asleep in, which, for me, is a miracle. Instead of tossing and turning, I'm able to sleep comfortably right from the start and begin my day feeling well-rested.

It's good for my menopausal night sweats: Thanks to menopause, I can get very hot at night, but with this pillow, I am always comfortable and not overheating. I even took it camping with me, and despite the humidity, the pillowcase remained sweat-and-odour-free!

It helps me sleep on my back: I'm really trying to sleep more on my back, as it's better for preventing wrinkles and reducing my snoring. Since using this pillow, back sleeping has become more of a norm.

Side sleeping in comfort: What I love about this pillow is that it has all these multifunctional areas, including one designated specifically for side sleeping. So, on those nights when back sleeping is just not in the cards, I can side sleep without hurting my spine and avoid waking up with a stiff neck.

There's an adjustment period: My preference has always been a bed full of soft down pillows, so it took a full week for me to get used to this more structured and supportive pillow. It's a habit, and once you commit to it, you can't imagine sleeping any other way. Now, I bring it with me when travelling so I don't get out of the routine of using it.

🏆 "What a difference a pillow makes!"

One Amazon reviewer swears the MKicesky Cervical Support Pillow "works really well" and calls it an "awesome product." The pillow does feel a bit "firm" at first, but they said you get used to it "rapidly."

Another shopper can't get enough of this "fantastic" and "super comfortable" pillow. It helped resolve their persistent neck and shoulder pain after just a "few nights."

A third reviewer called it a "great" purchase and wrote that it worked well at "reducing neck pain." However, they did find a pillowcase a bit "rough."

"What a difference a pillow makes," commented a third user, whose neck and shoulder pain improved after just one night of sleeping on it. "I will never go back to a regular pillow again."

Despite thousands of five-star reviews, one shopper who "really wanted it to work" ended up sending the pillow back after three nights, complaining it was "too high."

Dr. Hooman Melamed, a board-certified orthopedic spine surgeon, told Yahoo Canada that cervical pillows like the MKicesky Cervical Support Pillow offer good support for back and side sleepers. "They are designed to help maintain the body's normal cervical curve, allowing the muscles and ligaments to relax, ultimately leading to reduced neck pain," Melamed said.

These pillows are "particularly good for those with chronic back and neck pain, arthritis sufferers, post-op surgery patients and athletes," he said. Even if you have sporadic neck pain, this pillow can help achieve a "good night's sleep."

Compared to standard down pillows, cervical pillows are much more supportive. "Those other pillows don't offer a high level of neck support," Melamed explained. Plus, they "trap body heat and can be an allergen." A cervical support pillow is better than foam pillows that don't breathe or contour to your shape, and unlike micro-bead pillows that retain heat and quickly lose their shape, a cervical pillow is all about long-lasting support.

However, Melamed reminds users that a pillow is by no means a "cure-all" but rather "just one tool in the arsenal to fight against back and neck pain," which is "one of the most common forms of pain."

He also cautioned that while Mkicesky claimed the pillow is effective for stomach sleepers, there is no proof, "even anecdotal," that it would be "suitable" for anyone other than back and side sleepers.

I woke up this morning, and my neck wasn't stiff. Does this mean I'm forever cured of neck and shoulder pain? Of course not. But I'm sleeping better than I have in months, and for once, I'm not complaining daily of lower back pain. Could it also be the pilates and yoga I engage in regularly? Sure. But regardless, wherever I travel, this MKicesky Cervical Support Pillow is coming with me.
