Baking Britain is set to return with plenty of sunshine - not that you'd know it by looking out of the window.

Forecasters have insisted the heatwave that roasted the country last week is set to roar back to life with temperatures soaring towards the middle of the month.

New maps show the weather will inch back up to 29C with Netweather maps indicating a peak on Monday July 15, with southern towns including Brighton, Chichester, Dover, Eastbourne and Newhaven in line for the best temperatures.

But things aren't at all bad in the north either with highs of between 25C and 27C expected in Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham and several other cities in the Midlands.

Temperatures will be a little cooler in the west - though still nice enough to hit the beach - with a range of between 24C and 26C in Somerset and Devon and 17C and 21C in the more coastal parts of Devon and Cornwall.

Netweather maps - which show likely temperatures in detail across the nation - show a mixed picture in Scotland too with peaks of 14C in the north to between 22C and 25C on the warmer parts of the east coast.

It comes after a scorching run up to the weekend - with the warmest temperatures of the year so far last week with 30.3C at Heathrow - and bright and sunny conditions on Saturday.

However, that soon gave way to winds and cooler weather on Sunday across almost all of the UK, with grey skies blanketing much of the country ever since.

Yesterday the BBC's Tomasz Schafernaker explained that summer wasn't living up to expectations, saying that the 20C weather was "a little unusual" for the time of year.

He said: "July statistically is our warmest month of the summer. But this July, at least the beginning, is looking very different. Mother Nature has decided to put a pause on the summer heat.

"It's going to be rather on the cool side, even really windy at times in the north of the UK and there is some rain on the way."

However, perhaps many of us won't mind that gloomy verdict, so long as there is a bit of summer heat still to come.
