When booking our summer holiday, many of us are looking for relaxation, long lies and days around the pool in the blazing sunshine.

But the last few years have seen stressful scenes in hotels across in Europe as tourists battle for sunbeds with reports of some holidaymakers having to wake up at the crack of dawn to try and secure one.

Despite the majority of establishments stating that the 'reserving' of sun loungers by placing your towel on them is banned, it's a rule that is seemingly not being obeyed by holidaymakers desperate to bag the best lounger.

Last summer guests at the Hotel Parasol Gardens in Torremolinos, Costa del Sol, were seen grappling for beds in scenes that have become known as 'towel gate'.

The unsightly scenes saw tourists of all ages jostling for the coveted poolside position. They had to wait outside the gates to the pool before a staff member gave the the nod to go.

And in shocking scenes they then charged forward and bagged loungers with their towels before leaving the pool area.

In some extreme circumstances, tourists have been reported to be up at 5am in order to reserve loungers.

As a result of the ugly scenes, some hotels now have a system in place where guests are allocated sunbeds on their arrival meaning there's no need to worry that you won't be able to find one.
