The hidden gem ski resorts to know about this winter
If your thoughts turn to winter holidays and skiing at this time of year, you might well find yourself fantasising about the most well-known ski resorts. From France and Switzerland to Austria and Italy, there is no end of Alpine charm sprinkled across Europe.
But this year, you might want to turn your attention to the lesser-known ski destinations, which are waiting to be discovered in the very same countries. Chances are, you won't have heard of these under-the-radar slopes, but they're full of authentic charm – and benefit from smaller crowds, too.

Leysin, Switzerland
For families, weekend ski trips and train transfer options
Located conveniently close to Geneva and Lausanne (with easy train transfer options), Leysin is a haven of beginner and intermediate slopes overlooking the magnificent Rhone Valley. The wide open piste makes it particularly good for families, with plenty of these to be found at Les Mosses, which is a short bus ride away. Thanks to its winning location, it's also a great choice for weekend skiing trips.
Val Cenis, France
For its high altitude, families and all abilities
This French ski resort is a wonderfully quiet alternative to its more party-inclined neighbour, Val Thorens (which can of course be easily visited on a trip here). It's made up of five charming French villages and is full of sun-dappled green and blue runs, making it an ideal spot for families and first-timers. It's a high-altitude resort, so there are also some red runs for the more adventurous, not to mention non-skiing fun like husky sledging and tobogganing.
Valmeinier, France
For high altitude, great value, families and all abilities
Magnifique mountain views are the perfect backdrop for this high-altitude resort in France, where there's an abundance of gentle green and blue slopes – and an equally relaxed aprè-ski atmosphere. Some challenging reds add interest for intermediate skiers, while the height means you can expect good snow conditions all season. Fugen, Austria
For great value, weekend breaks, families and all abilities
Among the soaring peaks of Austria’s Zillertal Valley, this is an idyllic destination for anyone interest in the spa side of a skiing holiday, with plenty of indulgent options that aid relaxation – plus delicious Austrian food to enjoy afterwards. The slopes are a great place to work up an appetite, with all-abilities piste and access to the wider Hochzillertal area. Plus, it's only less than an hour's drive from Innsbruck airport.
La Massana, Andorra
For beginners and excellent value
Fancy some delicious tapas and fine vino tinto after a wonderful day's skiing? Head for Andorra’s Vallnord ski region, specifically La Massana, which is just down the road from the better-known party town of Arinsal (to which you can also get a quick Gondola). Gentle blues and reds make this a great spot for families and beginners.
Pila, Italy
For great value, high altitude, families and short breaks
Surrounded by legendary mountains – Mont Blanc, Monte Rosa and the Matterhorn – it's easy to overlook Pila, but it's also well worth taking a second glance and lingering in this hidden gem. Popular with locals, it's full of quiet, tree-lined runs that are covered in great snowfall from December (its high-altitude makes sure of this). Families are welcomed with open arms and everything you'd expect from classic Italian hospitality.
Le Grand Bornand, France
For families, beginners and weekend breaks
A quick and easy transfer away from Geneva Airport, this resort in the French Alps is perfect for families, with plenty of nursery slopes and easy blue runs. It's full of Savoyard charm to, with authentic places to stay and eat – don't miss a wonderfully indulgent fondue full of locally produced Reblochon.
St Johann in Tirol, Austria
For families, beginners and weekend breaks
Near to the lively resort of Kitzbüel, St Johann is a lovely alternative that's full of Austrian charm, located just an hour away from Salzburg airport. There's a fun park for anyone looking to try out some daring freestyle moves, as well as plenty of piste for those seeking a gentler holiday. Authentic Tirolean dishes are served in traditional mountain huts and a friendly atmosphere reigns.
Serre Chevalier, France
For high altitude, a big ski area, families and all abilities
Uncrowded slopes, high altitude and excellent snow conditions are on offer at this hidden gem in the French Alps. Serre Chevalier also offers plenty of fun off the slopes, including a giant zipline and toboggan run that will delight children. Bluebirds are a frequent occurrence here, so don't forget to pack your sunglasses.
