Despite being perhaps the most infamous royal abode, Buckingham Palace's future is looking pretty questionable following news that the Queen has 'permanently' moved out. It comes after months of speculation that Her Majesty would be making Windsor Castle her full-time residence, with royal experts now seemingly confirming the Monarch's decision.

Speaking to OK!, royal expert Duncan Larcombe revealed that the Queen decided to leave Buckingham Palace as it 'became less and less her home from home' after Prince Philip's passing last year. 'She's taking a decision which a lot of people have almost been willing her to do for a number of years, long before The Duke of Edinburgh had died,' the expert explained. 'Sometimes these things are a wake up call. In the last 10 or 15 years, the Queen would always leave Buckingham Palace on a Thursday, spend the weekend at Windsor and then be back at her desk and staying in her private apartment.'

Larcombe went on: 'But I think it became less and less her home from home because, as the Duke of Edinburgh retired from official duties, it was really Sandringham, Windsor and Balmoral where he spent his time.'

He continued, 'When you looked at Buckingham Palace you thought that you were looking at the home of The Queen but what you're actually looking at is the Queen's offices. Buckingham Palace has never really been her home, it's always been Windsor.'

So, with the Queen all moved out of Buckingham Palace, what's next for the world-famous building? According to another royal insider, who spoke to the Daily Mail, the next royal inhabitant at Buckingham Palace will be Prince Charles and his wife Camilla Parker-Bowles.

'[Prince Charles is] firmly of the view that it’s the visible symbol of the monarchy in the nation’s capital and therefore must be his home,' the source explained. 'The Prince of Wales will not move into Buckingham Palace before he is King. But when he is, he absolutely will.'

News that Prince Charles plans to live at Buckingham Palace when he's King should come as no surprise – although his vision for a life at the Palace will look a lot different to what we're used to. 'Despite what everybody thinks about him not wanting to live there, he will certainly have accommodation there – but it will be a much more modest flat-above-the-shop situation akin to that of the Prime Minister at Downing Street,' another source revealed.

'The Prince of Wales strongly believes that these places have got to deliver something for the public beyond just being somewhere for members of the Royal Family to live,' the source said. 'Everything is seen through the lens of the question: 'What value is this offering to the public?"'
