They may divide opinion, but for many the Royal family are not just important, but cherished.

According to a YouGov survey last year, more than two thirds of people (69%) said they were monarchists – more than three times higher than those who oppose the Royals.

But what makes so many people love the Royal family so much?

The topic is up for discussion in the latest episode of Yahoo UK’s podcast, Britain is a Nation of…, which focuses on the Royal family.

Speaking on the podcast Nick Ede, PR expert and Royal commentator, said: “I think because of politics and how the government is going at the moment and has been for a few years, a lot of people want to hold onto something that they feel is standard and has a trajectory where they know what is going to happen.

“So what they do is they align themselves with something that’s quite familiar to them and the monarchy to them is a familiar thing that has stayed the same through so many things, from world wars through to disaster. They’re always there.

“So I think when people are uncertain they want to always hold on to something and I think that’s why they’re quite strong in their belief for the monarchy.”

Listen to a discussion of these statistics on Yahoo and YouGov’s podcast, Britain is a Nation of…

While the majority of Brits are fans of the Royals, there are some they like more than others.

A poll by YouGov in November 2018 put Prince Harry as the most popular Royal, with 77% reporting a positive attitude towards him, followed by the Queen who is like by 74% of Brits.

Prince William came in at third place, followed by his wife Kate, and then Prince Philip in fifth place with a 56% approvals rating.

Perhaps surprisingly, the Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle was in sixth place with Prince Charles in seventh.

Victoria Waldersee, data journalist at YouGov, said: “Meghan is surprisingly low on the rankings still but I guess she is a fairly new addition to the family.”

Nick Ede said it’s not really a surprise that Prince Harry tops the list when it comes to popularity.

“He’s obviously more fun, he’s the spare and the spare as we all know is allowed to go away to Las Vegas and do lots of naughty things and marry a gorgeous Hollywood star,” he told the podcast.

“All those things add up to somebody you kind of want to be your best friend and you sort of want to be as well. So I can see that’s why he would be the top of that poll.”

This survey was made possible by YouGov’s panel of 6 million respondents. Join the trend and share your opinions with the world today.
