Helena Christensen becomes BoConcept’s new global artistic director
Born in Copenhagen, supermodel and photographer Helena Christiansen has been appointed a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, launched fashion magazine Nylon as founding partner and creative director, and is currently one half of lifestyle company Staerkandchristensen and the creative director of the luxury perfume brand Strangelove.
Branching out from the world of fashion, she has also collaborated on best-selling designs for Habitat London and, now, she has taken on an important role at BoConcept, one of the most renowned furniture companies from her home country of Denmark.
BoConcept’s appointment of Christiansen as global artistic director may be a surprise to some, but there can be no doubt that the brand and the beauty’s tastes and values align.
‘Great interior design is about creating positive emotions by working with colour, light, shapes and textures, creating a haven where people can feel relaxed and also energised and inspired,’ says the style icon, whose homes in Manhattan, Upstate New York and on the Danish coast display her design credentials.
‘I’m always collecting pieces that I know will look amazing in my homes, and BoConcept’s designs have become a part of that journey for me’, continues Christiansen.
‘I wake up feeling excited about walking through my home, and if I’m out, I’m excited to return. A well-designed home can make you feel calm in a chaotic world or energised in a space where you need to focus. I’ve been a nomad my whole adult life, so I’ve learned that home is where you create your own sense of beauty and comfort.’
What is Christiansen’s main goal in her new role? ‘I want to share why design is important and help inspire people to create spaces that feel good to them,’ she tells us. The first step on that path is sharing her own edit of BoConcept’s designs – from textured sofas to the perfect dining tables for entertaining, these are all pieces with the official supermodel seal of approval.
Helena Christiansen’s BoConcept edit
The ‘Bergamo’ – ‘It is the ultimate sofa – I just love to curl up in it.’
The ‘Santiago’ – ‘Ideal for getting everyone around the table on lazy Sundays with friends. Just perfect.’
The ‘Imola’ – ‘I like the story of how a tennis ball inspired the shape of this chair. It’s a beautiful piece of standout Danish craftsmanship.’
The ‘Seoul’ – ‘This takes me back to growing up in Denmark. One of those classic designs that’s beautiful in its simplicity. These are dining chairs for life.’
The ‘Carmo’ – ‘The cubic shape of this sofa is just so chic. And it almost feels like a blank canvas for you to add your own stamp on it.’
