'Heavy trash' week is coming

May 2—GREENSBURG — Twice each year, Greensburg holds "heavy trash" weeks when appliances, furniture, construction debris and most other large items are collected the day of any given resident's normal trash pick-up.

This year's spring heavy trash pick-up is scheduled for May 20 to 24. This service is only for Greensburg residents on a city trash route.

Residents are reminded to put heavy trash out on the curb a couple of days before their usual pick up.

Items not permitted in heavy trash include construction and demolition debris, tires, batteries, CFC appliances, electronics (computers, TV, monitors), household hazardous waste, paint, chemicals, mass quantities of recyclable materials, stone, dirt, brush, and loose unbagged trash. The Street Department will not pick these items up.

Brush or Yard Waste

The city does provide limited collection of brush and yard waste.

If you have done the work yourself, place these materials at the curb for collection the same day as your trash collection.

Loose material must be bagged, preferably in clear or marked bags, and placed away from your regular trash. Brush must be stacked in front of your property with all cut ends facing the street.

If you have contracted with someone to trim vegetation on your property, it is their responsibility to remove the resulting waste.

In the fall, leaves are collected separately and must be also bagged.

E-scrap

State law forbids the disposal of electronics in any landfill, so the city cannot collect them.

The Decatur County Solid Waste District holds various events throughout the year when such items are collected for recycling. Check their website at https://decaturcountyrecycling.com/ or read the Daily News for information about upcoming e-scrap collection events.

Recycling

House to house recycling throughout the city is administered by the Decatur County Solid Waste District. You may request delivery of a recycle container by calling 812-663-0960.

Your recyclables will be collected every other week on the same day as your trash collection excluding weeks that include a holiday.
