Heard of design brand Ask og Eng? This home tells you all you need to know about its serene aesthetic
When it comes to designing a showroom, it’s customary to start with the pieces and then think about how best to integrate them into the space. Kine Ask Stenersen and Kristoffer Eng, the founders of Norwegian brand Ask og Eng, however, pride themselves on not thinking like everyone else.
They took their family home, emptied it of kids’ toys and clutter, and turned it into a liveable showroom that has become the centre of an evolving vision for their brand.
‘We went through the house thinking what do we need to complete the space and what do we need to create a rounded collection,’ recalls stylist Kate Imogen Wood, who has worked with Kine and Kristoffer since the start of this space’s transformation.
Together they have found a community of artists and artisans – people around the world making pieces by hand – who share their ethos and whose lighting, ceramics, paintings and more they can sell alongside their own newly created furniture pieces.
These sofas, armchairs and tables are a fresh direction for a brand that has until now been known for its kitchens (the first of which was a passion project, built in the couple’s garage). Named the ‘Object’ collection, it continues their love of one material: bamboo. This sustainable, hardwearing plant is the basis of everything they make. In fact, even the colour palette of this interior is taken from the natural shades in which it can be stained.
‘Home was the place that represented them best,’ says Kate, pointing out that almost everything in this 200-year-old townhouse located in Drammen, a short train ride from Oslo, is for sale.
And, if you want to turn a shopping trip or consultation (the brand also has a bespoke design service) into an overnight stay, you can even book the apartment to immerse yourself in Kine and Kristoffer’s world. It’s retail at its most calming. askogeng.no
