I’m the middle of five children, but the only one in two generations (on my father’s side) who has curly hair. My mother, god bless her, had no history of it in her family. So, she was suddenly tasked with dealing with a hair type she knew nothing about. She did her research, though, talking to hairstylists, the beauty counter girls at Bloomingdale's, and friends—and found out that leave-in conditioners were the solution to caring for curly hair. It’s been 25 years since her discovery, and leave-in conditioners are (besides shampoo) the only consistent part of my hair care routine.

This decades-long commitment is because a good leave-in conditioner does pretty much everything, regardless of hair type. Below are my favorite leave-in conditioners (old and new) that will have you ditching regular conditioners and sending me thank-you notes.

This is the cheapest and most universal leave-in conditioner. My sisters (one with pin-straight hair, and the other with loose waves) and I equally love this product, which we discovered at Walgreens a decade (or more) ago. The texture is a combination of a gel, cream, and oil, and it feels like liquid silk. The impressive part, however, is the effect—all of us experience frizz-free hair, extreme shine, and stronger strands. And for my curls specifically, it defines them and gives them bounce without looking like uncooked pasta. I am simply one of its nearly 42,000 five-star fans.

Salt sprays are my siren song—the promised benefits of effortless waves that look like a day at the beach always draws me in. But I’m always let down by crunchy, dry, and brittle strands—except for when I use IGK’s Rich Kid Air-Dry Cream. After shampooing, I wring out the extra water and comb a generous amount through my hair. Then I brush it out effortlessly and when it (air) dries, my hair is touchable with a soft definition that gives Kaia Gerber at the 2023 Met Gala.
