Harley Quinn speaks! Hear Lady Gaga's take on DC character in “Joker: Folie à Deux ”audio preview

Gaga coaxes Joaquin Phoenix's Joker to do as he pleases in the first official preview of her voice as the DC Comics villainess.

Lady Gaga already teased a preview of her Joker face — now, one week out from the highly-anticipated sequel's April 9 trailer debut, she's officially debuted her Harley Quinn voice in the first audio preview from Joker: Folie à Deux.

In a short preview posted to the movie's verified TikTok account on Tuesday, Gaga channels a sensual, breathy version of the DC Comics villainess to coax Joaquin Phoenix's Joker to do as he pleases. "You can do anything you want," Gaga-as-Harley coos in the clip below. "You're Joker."

While the iconic character's vocals have changed over the years depending on who's voicing her, Harley Quinn has usually been portrayed with a Brooklyn accent thanks to voice actress Arleen Sorkin, who originated the role in Batman: The Animated Series. Margot Robbie recently continued the trend with her bold, heavily accented interpretation in the DC Extended Universe's live-action projects, so Gaga's seemingly non-accented version comes as a bit of a departure from what fans are used to hearing.

In January, Robbie told  Variety on the Golden Globes red carpet that she hadn't yet spoken to Gaga about passing the baton to her ahead of Joker: Folie à Deux.

"Oh my God, she’s going to crush it. Are you kidding? She’s going to be amazing, I can’t wait to see it," she said. "I actually haven’t spoken to her about it. I almost don’t want to know so I can save it for the surprise when I get to see the movie."

Rumored to be a fantastical musical featuring covers of well-known songs, director Todd Phillips' second Joker movie reportedly picks up after the events of the 2019 project, with Phoenix's Arthur Fleck (who evolves into the titular character throughout the film) finding love with a psychiatrist, Dr. Harleen Quinzel (Gaga), while confined to Gotham City's Arkham Asylum.

Gaga first boarded the movie in 2022, with production lasting until early 2023. Photos from the set teased Gaga's Harley Quinn costume consisting of a bright red blazer, a checkered undershirt, and clown-inspired makeup.

Joker: Folie à Deux is poised to follow in the footsteps of the first film's success. The first anti-hero smash raked in over $1 billion at the global box office and earned Phoenix the Best Actor prize at the 2020 Oscars — the same ceremony where the film competed in the Best Picture category.

Warner Bros. will release Joker: Folie à Deux — also starring Zazie Beetz, Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, and produced by Gaga's A Star Is Born director-costar Bradley Cooper — in theaters on Oct. 4. Listen to Gaga as Harley Quinn in the video above.
