Halloween pumpkin decorating tutorial without the carving mess

It’s not long until Halloween, and if you want to celebrate the season and decorate your home without the mess of pumpkin carving, painting and decorating a pumpkin is a great, fun alternative. There are endless possibilities of what you can create, but I’m going to show you how to produce this spooky spider pumpkin.

When looking for Halloween craft supplies, Hobbycraft is a great place to head to as they have so much of it - all for really affordable prices. I got most of the items in this tutorial from Hobbycraft. For the pumpkins themselves, Morrisons have the best and cheapest that I’ve seen (£1.50 for a large pumpkin), but you’ll need to get in there fast.

You will need black and silver (£1 from Hobbycraft), spider-themed decoupage paper (£2 from Hobbycraft), black foam spider stickers (£1 from Hobbycraft), mini glue dots (£1 from Hobbycraft), glow in the dark spider stickers (£1 from Morrisons), silver glitter (£4 from Hobbycraft), a paper mache spider (£2 from Hobbycraft), PVA glue.

First you need to paint your pumpkin completely black. Depending on the paint you use and the surface of your pumpkin, you may need two coats to get it completely opaque. Once the paint is more or less dry, cover half the pumpkin in PVA glue, from a straight line down the centre. Cut a straight piece of your decoupage paper and stick along this line to create a clean divide between the two halfs of your pumpkin. Then, using more glue, layer on the rest of your decoupage paper until the whole half of your pumpkin is covered.

Once your decoupage has dried, stick on your black foam spiders on top of it, all round this half of your pumpkin. Then, onto the black half of your pumpkin, do the same with your glow in the dark spider stickers.

Now it’s time to tackle that giant spider. Paint your spider silver, then when it’s dry, cover it in PVA glue and coat it in silver glitter. When it is completely dry, shake off any excess glitter and use your glue dots to stick it onto the top of the black half of your pumpkin. Spooktastic!
