Article updated on 20/10/2022: After Gwyneth Paltrow previously joked that it took her 20 years to find 'the Brad I was supposed to marry', the Sliding Doors star has gushed about her ex-fiancé and their friendship.

Speaking with Entertainment Tonight on Tuesday, the Goop founder discussed what happened after she 'first broke up up' with Pitt, following their engagement and three-year relationship.

'When we first broke up, we weren't friends for a while and then we sort of found our way back, probably about 18 or 19 years ago, something like that, and then just kind of stayed in touch over the years,' she said.

Maintaining that she's still fond of Pitt, the 50-year-old gushed: 'I adore him.

'He's an amazing person, and he's a great entrepreneur, and such a creative, and such a good person. I really love him. I'm a big fan.'

Paltrow has been married to writer, director and producer Brad Falchuk since 2018, after her 13-year-marriage to Chris Martin ended in 2016. Brad Pitt split from his wife in 2016 following an 11-year relationship and two-year marriage. The pair co-parent their six children.

Before Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Aniston, Brad Pitt dated Gwyneth Paltrow from 1994 to 1997, during which time the pair were engaged.

But while the couple's former relationship didn't stand the test of time, they've kept in touch and have revealed they still love each other - as friends, of course.

During a recent interview on Paltrow's Goop website, the exes reflected on their previous relationship and current friendship.

In the conversation Paltrow, 49, brought up her late father Bruce, who died in 2002, and his approval of Pitt, who he was excited to have as a son-in-law, at which point she said: 'Though we didn't get married, unfortunately.'

'Right,' Pitt said with a laugh. 'Oh man, everything works out, doesn't it?'

Paltrow, who was married to Chris Martin for 13 years before the pair famously 'consciously uncoupled', and tied the knot to writer/producer Brad Falchuk in 2018, joked: 'Yes, it does. I finally found the Brad I was supposed to marry. It just took me 20 years.'

Pitt added: 'And it's lovely to have you as a friend now.'

The Sliding Doors star replied: 'It is.'

'And I do love you,' said Pitt.

Paltrow responded: 'I love you so much.'

Pitt later praised Paltrow's father, saying the late director had a 'profound effect on me and is someone I still think about'.

He admitted to admiring his parenting, adding: 'That man was funny. He was funny. And you guys were so funny together, ripping across the table, which was a rarity that I hadn't experienced much, and I loved it.

'The fun you guys had was infectious. You could just see just how much he adored you.'

Paltrow asked: 'Did you feel paternal energy from him?'

He replied: '100 per cent. I felt that same kind of guidance that you would get from a coach or a mentor.'

In January 2020, Paltrow opened up to Harper's Bazaar about being 'friendly' with Pitt, adding that she doesn't 'have any really bad blood' with any of her exes.

She did, however, admit in the past that she 'f***ed up' some of her previous relationships.

When speaking about her love life on the Girlboss podcast in 2017, she said: 'Oh my God, I’ve f***** up so many relationships.

'I’m a pretty good friend and sister and daughter, but I am at my potentially most vulnerable and f***** up in the romantic slice of the pie.'

The actor-turned-businesswoman who also said she 'consciously uncoupled' from Martin, added: 'It’s taken me a lot of work to get to the place where I have a good romantic relationship.

'Success to me is relationships that function really well.'

Paltrow shares two children - Apple, 18 and Moses, 16 - with her ex-husband Martin, who is now in a relationship with former ELLE UK cover star and Fifty Shades alum Dakota Johnson.

As for Pitt, he shares six children with his ex-wife Angelina Jolie.
